Periodontal Disease Treatment: Comprehensive Periodontal Care
Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a concern that affects many, from young adults to the elderly. At Thomas Dentistry, we recognize the importance of addressing this issue as a fundamental aspect of family dentistry. Our team is dedicated to providing comprehensive care, ensuring that every family member maintains optimal gum health.
Early detection and treatment of periodontal disease are crucial. Left unchecked, it can lead to more severe dental issues, including tooth loss. Our approach is not just about treatment; it’s about education. We believe in empowering our patients with the knowledge they need to take proactive steps in their oral care routine.
Patients trust Thomas Dentistry because of our commitment to excellence. We utilize the latest techniques and technologies in the field, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible care. Whether you’re coming in for a routine check-up or addressing specific concerns, you can be confident that your oral health is in expert hands.
Recognizing the Symptoms of Periodontal Disease
One of the first steps in tackling periodontal disease is recognizing its symptoms. While some signs may seem subtle, they can escalate if not addressed promptly. At Thomas Dentistry, we educate our patients on what to look out for, ensuring that early intervention is possible.
Common symptoms include red, swollen gums that may bleed easily during brushing or flossing. You might also notice persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. In more advanced stages, you could experience gum recession, leading to longer-looking teeth, or even feel some teeth becoming loose. These symptoms are not just discomforting; they are warning signs that require immediate attention.
Understanding the symptoms allows you to take timely action. If you or any family member experiences these signs, we recommend scheduling an appointment. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the condition from worsening and affecting your overall oral health.

When it comes to periodontal care, the expertise of the periodontist matters. At Thomas Dentistry, our periodontists are not just highly qualified; they are deeply committed to patient care. With years of specialized training and experience, they offer a range of treatments from preventive measures to advanced therapies, ensuring that you receive the most effective care tailored to your needs.
What sets our periodontists apart is their approach to patient care. They take the time to understand your specific concerns, educate you on treatment options, and develop a personalized plan. Utilizing the latest technology and techniques, they ensure a comfortable and successful treatment experience.

Understanding Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing
One of the most effective treatments for periodontal disease is scaling and root planing. This procedure is often recommended for patients experiencing moderate to severe gum disease. At Thomas Dentistry, we ensure that this treatment is as comfortable and effective as possible, helping you regain your oral health.
Scaling and root planing involves a deep cleaning process that goes beyond the gum line to remove plaque and tartar buildup. The procedure not only cleans the teeth but also smooths the roots to help the gums reattach. It’s a crucial step in halting the progression of periodontal disease and preventing further complications.
The Planning Process for Scaling and Root Planing:
- Initial Consultation: A thorough examination to assess the severity of gum disease.
- Treatment Planning: Customizing the procedure based on your specific needs.
- Local Anesthesia: Administering local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free experience.
- Scaling: Removal of plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line.
- Root Planing: Smoothing the root surfaces to encourage gum reattachment.
- Post-Treatment Care: Guidelines for maintaining oral hygiene and scheduling follow-up appointments.

“This was my first dental visit and I must say they were definitely unorganized as their X-ray machine kept freezing the images delaying my appointment and they’re not put together. The manager Carmen told me I was going to have to pay a $70 balance. Which I completely agreed on no problem. I got a bill for $140 and was never told I had a $50 co-pay on top & they don’t use silver filling so I had to pay extra for a white filling. I was not told about any of these extra charges. The manager Carmen hung up on me over the phone without trying to fully explain everything and was very rude to me. I would not recommend this dentist because they are not truthful and they want you to pay double your bill so please be careful.”

“Went to that office last year to get a crown on implant and Dr. Thomas did the ugliest crown possible. Shape and height looked completely different from natural tooth I had in that place before. He did not even try to fix it. This year my new dentist confirmed that the crown should have been done completely different but now Im stuck with this crown for a while because it will cost a ton to re-do it since that is a dental implant crown, not just a regular crown. I guess I missed the first red flag when they said they do root canals and extractions too. Of course, why even going to roots canals specialists and oral surgeons if You can get a “buffet of services” at Dr. Thomas! Also Molly at the front desk is the rudest receptionist I ve even seen, billing office could not get the numbers right and overcharged me for about $800 then refunded but can this office be more unprofessional and thirsty for money?!!”

I have had everything from cleaning, fillings, root canal, crown and they have all gone well. The office is nice, conveniently located and has off street parking. The entire staff is very friendly and helpful. Dr. Jaswal is excellent, takes his time not only with his work but explaining what you have going on, your options etc. Overall only good things to say about this place and definitely recommend it.”

Happy Client from Mercer Island Office
“Dr. Nguyen and the dental hygienists are super nice! I felt comfortable and safe—even the time I started crying when I had a panic attack before getting some cavities filled. (Sorry about that lol.) Anyways, Dr. Nguyen was very kind, gave me space to chill out, and didn’t make me feel embarrassed, even though I wouldn’t have blamed him if he did.”

Our FAQ's
At Thomas Dentistry, we diagnose periodontal disease through a comprehensive oral examination, which may include X-rays and measuring the depth of pockets around the teeth.
Common symptoms include red, swollen gums, bleeding during brushing, persistent bad breath, and in advanced stages, loose teeth.
The cost varies depending on the severity of the condition and the type of treatment required. We offer various payment options to make treatment accessible.
The duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of the periodontal disease. Some procedures may require multiple visits.
Gingivitis and periodontal disease are both forms of gum disease, but they differ in severity and treatment requirements. Gingivitis is the milder, initial stage characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding gums during brushing or flossing. It is usually reversible with good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings. Periodontal disease, on the other hand, is a more advanced form of gum disease that affects not only the gums but also the bone supporting the teeth. It can lead to tooth loss if not treated and often requires more intensive treatments like scaling and root planning or surgical procedures.
